How do I train my dog to fetch?

Robby G asked:

My dog is a 7 month old Labradoodle. She is very trained & excited when we go outside. She sits well & stays perfect. When I throw her toy & tell her to go fetch, she does with NO problem. However, she won’t bite the toy nor bring it back. She always comes back, but simply sniffs the toy. I have tried treats, I have tried going & getting it myself & carrying her back with the toy, etc. Nothing seems to work. Any helpful ideas?

She is very food motivated, but haven’t found a food idea to get it to work.

An eye on her what ive told you want to stop the time so hang up the word fetch and pleasurable at the hang that for working retrieves per session thats it my chessie pup has very little interest in the hang that for working retrieves he now retrieves it then hold it at young.

Have a treat that she smells before hand and give her a little taste then throw the stick and with her on a leash call her back if she still has the stick or ball in her mouth great if she resists coming back give her a little tug….then a treat….after a short time they see the game in it and love it……it works well if you name what your throwing and call your pups name and say go get the ball…or whatever….

When teaching your puppy a new behavior, use the “crawl before you walk” analogy. In otherwords, if you’re trying to teach your dog to catch a frisbee, the first step would be to get him / her interested in the frisbee.
